The Effects of Recruitment, Selection, and Job Placement on Ship Crew Performance at PT Pelayaran Guntur Line
Abstract
This study investigates the effects of recruitment, selection, and job placement on ship crew performance at PT Pelayaran Guntur Line. The research was prompted by increases in minor incidents, safety nonconformities, and suboptimal performance evaluations between 2023 and 2025. An associative quantitative design was applied to 100 active crew members selected through convenience sampling from a population of 133. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed with partial least squares structural equation modeling in SmartPLS 4. Recruitment had a significant positive effect on performance (β = 0.269; p = 0.009), whereas selection had no statistically significant effect (β = −0.230; p = 0.062). Job placement produced the strongest positive effect (β = 0.889; p < 0.001). The final model explained 79.6% of the variance in crew performance. These findings indicate that candidate information obtained during recruitment and selection should be integrated into competency-based placement decisions and systematic post-assignment evaluations
