Abstract

This study discusses the phenomenon of gastric drug abuse that is illegally traded through Facebook and used as an abortion aid by some individuals. This practice is carried out by utilizing social media as a distribution and promotion channel for peptic ulcer drugs containing the active substance misoprostol. The objective of this research is to analyze the social reasoning employed by gastric drug users in justifying the act of illegal abortion performed without medical supervision. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews, non-participatory observations, and literature studies. Informants consist of three abortion drug users and a midwife, as a medical professional. The technique of neutralization, which includes five strategies of moral justification, serves as a theoretical framework to analyze the phenomena according to the findings. The results show that perpetrators used techniques of denial of responsibility, denial of injury, denial of the victim, condemnation of the condemners, and appeal to higher loyalties to rationalize their actions. This phenomenon shows that the perpetrator is trying to maintain a moral self-image amid violations of the law and social norms that are committed. This study concludes that the use of social media has strengthened the space for justification for illegal practices and shows the weak supervision of the distribution of medication in the digital realm.
