Pengaruh Body Image terhadap Self-Esteem pada Remaja pengguna Instagram
Abstract
The rapid development of information technology has brought significant changes to adolescents' patterns of interaction and socialization. Globally, Instagram has become one of the most popular social media platforms among adolescents and young adults. The widespread use of Instagram not only affects communication patterns but also has significant psychological implications, particularly for Self-esteem. Within the context of social media, especially Instagram, the development of Self-esteem is closely related to how individuals perceive their bodies, commonly referred to as Body image. As a highly visual platform, Instagram continuously exposes users to idealized standards of beauty and body appearance, which may influence individuals' self-evaluation. This study aimed to examine the influence of Body image on Self-esteem among adolescent Instagram users. This study employed a quantitative research method with a descriptive approach. The participants consisted of 101 adolescent Instagram users selected using a non-probability sampling technique, specifically purposive sampling. The findings revealed that the majority of respondents demonstrated a moderate level of Self-esteem (66 respondents; 65.3%), while the majority also reported a moderate level of Body image (72 respondents; 71.3%). The results of the simple linear regression analysis indicated a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (H₁). These findings indicate that Body image has a positive and statistically significant influence on Self-esteem among adolescent Instagram users. Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) was 0.149, indicating that Body image accounted for 14.9% of the variance in Self-esteem, while the remaining 85.1% was explained by other factors beyond the scope of this study. Therefore, the more positive adolescents perceive their Body image, the higher their level of Self-esteem tends to be. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights for adolescents, parents, educators, and mental health professionals in promoting Self-esteem through the development of a positive Body image while also considering other psychological and social factors that contribute to adolescent development.
